EIGHT

08/08/08.... prompts me to write something about eight. Well, the most popular instance of number 8 would be a 8 X 8 chess-board.

Eight has been considered auspicious by many ancient civilizations...Chinese have eight immortal deities, in Christianity eight is allegoric to Beatitudes, in Islam eight is the number of angels carrying the throne of Allah, in Hinduism Goddess Lakshmi has eight fold forms, and besides 108 is considered pious in Hinduism...

One of the most noticeable feature of 8 is its symmetry... its the most symmetric number next to 0. Architects have special love for eight sided courtyards... and mentionable are the eight sided pagodas and gazebos.... And because of this symmetry - 8 has won itself a special place in digital representation of numbers! Yes, as in a calculator, all digits can be written out of 8...

But before 8 came into its present form... It looked like the following:

It was finally put in its current form by the Europeans...

But, there is another story to "why 8 looks like as it is today?"
Have a look at this

Interesting to note that every digit has as many corners as the number it represents !!! Gradually the sharp edges of eight were rounded to the present form.

There are many amazing mathematical properties of 8... I ll describe them some other day may be.

sorry there was a mistake... i have changed the pic now.. plus instead of the number of corners, it is the number of acute angles + right angles.
